Finding a Responsible Rafeiro do Alentejo Breeder

Look for a Rafeiro do Alentejo breeder who can show identifiable parents, health records, the puppy’s upbringing and clear placement terms.
The Portuguese Kennel Club publishes the breed profile and standard. The AKC lists the Rafeiro in its Foundation Stock Service. Ask how to check the puppy’s registration documents with the issuing registry.
For Portuguese listings and puppy availability, see the availability guide.
Start with your own requirements
Describe the home honestly: children, other pets, visitors, fencing, working hours and relevant dog experience. Ask whether the breeder believes a Rafeiro suits that arrangement. Be wary of a breeder whose only question is which color you want.
If you want a livestock guardian, describe the actual livestock, property and management setup. If you want a companion, describe daily household life. The breed standard names property and livestock guarding as the breed’s purpose, and a companion home is a different placement.
Use the temperament guide to prepare questions about visitors and boundaries. Ask the breeder what would make them decline a placement. Be cautious if the answer is that the breed suits everyone.
Verify identity and the people involved
Ask for the breeder’s name, location, registry information and the identities of the parents. Clarify which documents accompany the puppy and how you can verify them with the issuing organization. Do not assume all registry systems use the same terminology or acceptance rules.
Arrange a suitable visit or live conversation to see the dogs and their environment. Ask who raised the litter and discuss the particular puppy’s upbringing.
Resolve discrepancies in names or documents before payment. For an international purchase, check travel requirements, veterinary paperwork and return arrangements for the actual route.
Meet or learn about the adult dogs
Ask how the adult dogs respond to visitors, ordinary handling, veterinary visits and other animals.
A breeder may appropriately manage visitor contact rather than letting you walk straight into a dog’s space. Look for a clear explanation and a comfortable routine. Do not demand that a guardian accept intrusive handling from a stranger as proof of friendliness.
Ask about behavior in relatives and previous placements. How have puppies developed in companion homes? What difficulties have occurred? Can the breeder discuss those cases and the support offered?

Request actual health documentation
Ask what health assessments were performed on both parents and why. Request copies or verifiable records, with dog identification and dates. If the breeder discusses orthopedic screening, ask which evaluation system was used and what the results mean.
Ask your veterinarian to interpret the parent health reports and help identify any further questions for the breeder.
Ask about significant illnesses, joint problems and ages and causes of death among close relatives, even if the breeder says the breed is healthy. The health guide covers hip dysplasia, bloat and the records to request.
Clarify what any health guarantee actually covers. A replacement-puppy promise, a reimbursement provision and a medical assessment requirement are different terms. Read the contract rather than relying on a verbal phrase.
Understand how puppies are prepared
Ask where the puppies live and what experiences they have had. Discuss gentle handling, household sounds, safe visitors, surfaces and transport. A future companion needs preparation for ordinary life beyond a field or kennel.
Ask how the breeder observes the litter and matches puppies to homes, and how those experiences, the food and the health records will carry over into your home.
The puppy preparation guide covers what you need to arrange on your side.
Read the contract and support policy
Confirm the total price, what is included, deposit conditions, collection or transport arrangements and the circumstances for a refund. Ask what happens if the puppy is medically unfit to travel or the placement is delayed. Do not send money while basic terms remain unclear.
Discuss ongoing contact and rehoming. If you cannot keep the dog later, what does the breeder require and what help is available? For a distant purchase, make that discussion practical: who arranges transport and how are costs handled?
Keep copies of the final terms and records. The AKC’s breeder-question guide covers parents, documents and support.
Recognize reasons to pause
Pause when a seller will not explain the parents, refuses meaningful records, pressures immediate payment or promotes aggression as proof of quality. Likewise, be cautious of exaggerated adult size, guaranteed allergy safety or exceptional longevity used to avoid ordinary health questions.
Request a written price and a list of inclusions. The ownership cost guide gives a dated Portuguese price estimate and a care budget.
If important questions remain unanswered, keep searching. The adoption guide describes another route to ownership.
