Do Rafeiros do Alentejo Shed? The Allergy Question

Rafeiros do Alentejo shed and are not hypoallergenic. The FCI standard specifies a dense, straight coat that is short or medium in length. PetMD’s breed-care guide describes regular shedding and comparatively modest grooming needs.

The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology explains that all dogs produce allergens and no breed is allergy-free.

If someone in your household has a dog allergy, discuss the proposed living situation and ways to reduce exposure with an allergist before committing.

What the coat tells you

The Rafeiro coat looks much less abundant than a long-coated mountain guardian’s, but it is dense, and the short or medium hairs accumulate on bedding, rugs and clothing.

Hair and allergens are different questions

ACAAI identifies allergens associated with dogs, including proteins in dander, saliva and urine. Loose hair carries some of that exposure, but how much hair a dog sheds will not tell you whether a person will react.

Organize ordinary shedding care

Regular gentle brushing removes loose hair and gives you a chance to notice changes in the skin. Start with a soft bristle brush or a rubber grooming tool and adjust to the dog’s coat and comfort.

Teach the dog to accept handling gradually. A brief cooperative session is preferable to forcing a large dog through a long grooming struggle. Pain, persistent avoidance or defensive responses call for veterinary or qualified behavior help.

The grooming guide covers brushing, bathing, feet, ears and teeth.

Make household cleaning practical

Washable bedding and a designated resting place can make loose hair easier to manage. Choose fabrics and cleaning routines that the household can maintain consistently.

Bedding, bathing arrangements and transport for a dog this size need planning beyond coat length. Our ownership-cost guide helps organize those expenses using actual local quotes.

Know when shedding needs assessment

Ordinary loose hair differs from bald patches, sores, marked scratching or an abrupt coat change. Have a veterinarian assess those signs, or persistent skin irritation, before you change the diet or care routine; not every coat change is seasonal.

The health guide covers how to prepare for a veterinary discussion about an individual dog’s care.

Agree placement terms before bringing a dog home

Discuss placement terms and ongoing support with the breeder or rescue before taking a dog home. The puppy guide covers preparation.
